Introducing … Merit – how the college announces student achievements

If you are a new matriculated student at the college, you should receive an email soon that offers you the opportunity to set up a personalized page in Merit, a software system the college uses to announce student accomplishments. Here are a few questions and answers that new students often have about the Merit system.

What is Merit?

Merit is a platform Hudson Valley Community College uses to publicize student accomplishments, like making the Dean’s List, studying abroad, or being named to lead a club or student organization. This platform allows us to organize all of your recognized college achievements online where you can claim them. You can share these positive stories with family and friends in social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Why is the college using Merit?

We want you to get the recognition you deserve for your hard work, academic success, and scholarly activities. Merit is the best way to showcase these accomplishments and, in some cases, we send a copy of your story to your hometown newspapers.

How does Merit work?

It creates a visual, institution-verified, web page that showcases everything you’ve achieved from the time you enroll through graduation and all the great accomplishments in between. Your first “achievement” is usually being named as part of the incoming class of matriculated students. Merit helps you create a powerful professional profile and positive online identity. The best part, it doesn’t require you to do any work, we do it for you.

Do other colleges/universities use Merit?

Yes, and your Merit page can follow you to the large number of colleges and universities who also use the system. If you transfer to SUNY Brockport, UAlbany, RIT, RPI, or hundreds of other schools, your Merit page follows you and the achievements you earn at your transfer school will be added to those you’ve earned at Hudson Valley. For many students, Merit serves as part of an online “resume” to show potential employers how successful you’ve been during your college years.

Can I opt out if I don’t want to use Merit?

Yes, you can choose to opt out of Merit. You will see an “Opt Out” link in the first email Merit sends to you. If you have already created a profile, you also have the ability to opt out at any time.

PLEASE NOTE: All information including in Merit announcements is considered “Directory Information.” The college takes seriously its commitment to not release information regarding students who have requested a hold on their FERPA-designated information. We run all student announcements through the college Registrar’s Office prior to sending them out to students and the media.
