Jennifer Acker headed to interlibrary loan conference as regional leader

Jennifer Acker heads to Syracuse today for the annual meeting of interlibrary loan librarians and support staff, who gather for the IDS Project conference each August. The IDS Project is a consortium of 60 public and private college and research libraries throughout New York State. The project is committed to research sharing and rapid response to requests for borrowing and lending and received several national awards and honors for innovations. Anyone who has recently used interlibrary loan services at Dwight Marvin Library can provide testimony to the blazing speed with which requests are filled! Several enhancements to interlibrary loan services will be announced at the start of the academic year.

Jennifer has the official title of “mentor” within the project and is now a leader for the regional user group in the Capital District. She provides guidance on implementing best practices for processing and workflow. Earlier this month, SUNY New Paltz library staff visited Dwight Marvin Library to meet with Jen and to learn from our practices. Jen’s travel expenses are paid by the project based on her role as a mentor.

Since September 2012, the Dwight Marvin Library has borrowed nearly 1,000 books from other institutions at faculty and student request, saving the college over $70,000 in cost of purchasing those titles individually (using an estimate of $70 per book purchased). In that same period, the library has lent more than 500 books to other libraries as part of reciprocal agreements.

Congratulations to Jen for her important role in this award-winning library service that contributes to student and employee success.
