Kindness that means a lot to me

Earlier this week, I asked a flustered-looking student if they needed help finding something, expecting them to say: “classroom xyz” or “my car.” Instead, they apologized that they had left their mask at home, having gotten out of the mask habit over the summer. They clearly didn’t want to risk transmitting the virus. I didn’t have a spare, but luckily HVCC-supplied masks are readily available all over campus and I easily found one for the student.

Given this incident and others, I want to give a “thank you!” shoutout to all the people on campus who are doing what they can to avoid spreading COVID, especially to immuno-compromised faculty.  Without them, many classes simply would not run.

For me, COVID-19 was like a mild cold. But it’s super serious for many others, including those who didn’t even know that they had underlying conditions. In the past 18 months, several of my dear friends died from COVID, one friend miscarried, my brother and mechanic were sick for months and still experience long-term COVID symptoms, and two health care professionals (a nurse and a doctor) among my family and friends changed careers because they got burnt out.

After all that trauma, it’s so nice to see the campus full of people again! I really appreciate all the folks who are making choices to protect everyone. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Yours truly,
Crystal
