Laparoscopic Tower Enhances Surgical Tech Student Learning

The college’s Surgical Technology Program is utilizing a newly purchased Stortz laparoscopic tower to simulate a minimally evasive abdominal surgery experience for first-year students. They have also figured out an unusual but holiday-appropriate gourd to fill in for a human abdomen.

Students using the simulation lab, which creates a mock operating room experience, learn the technique and associated benefits of laparoscopic surgery.   In this scenario, a laparoscopic tower, which includes a camera, light source and lens is used in conjunction with a pumpkin and a 1 centimeter incision to replicate a real life laparoscopic abdominal surgery.
