Course Description: The course will begin with a historical overview of child abuse and neglect, and the evolution of child protective services. Students will discover the difference between abuse and neglect, and how culture and religion impact parental behavior. Sociological and psychological factors that compound the incidence of child abuse including poverty, addiction and domestic violence will be explored. Students will learn how the criminal and family courts are involved and the variety of judicial interventions. The role of mandated reporters and the scope of their legal responsibility will be examined along with the ethical and moral issues related to the response of the general public. The course will conclude with treatment options for children and an exploration of how students may become professionals who work on behalf of abused and neglected children.

Instructor: Kelleena M. Richards is an attorney who has worked exclusively in the field of child abuse and neglect for more than 15 years. She has analyzed over 100,00 reports of child abuse and neglect from across New York State, and serves as a legal adviser to the child abuse hotline.
