Sorry to disappoint you, but this post is not about pie, the food. Instead, we will talk about pie charts.
A pie chart is used to visually represent data. And if we are not careful, we can easily create an inaccessible pie chart. The image below represents a pie chart about Reasons for Inaccessibility. What do you notice? Well, each slice of the pie is represented with a different shade of gray. Anyone who is color blind will have difficulty reading this chart because to them it will look like one gray circle.
Color should not be the only way to indicate information. To help make pie charts more accessible, put labels directly on each of the slices as a secondary key. The Americans’ Favorite Donuts pie chart below shows how the labels make it more accessible.
