“Life and Limb: The Toll of the Civil War” exhibit and speaker

 

“Life and Limb: The Toll of the Civil War,” a traveling exhibition from the National Library of Medicine is on display in the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Atrium of the Marvin Library Learning Commons through Feb. 28, 2015.

“Life and Limb: The Toll of the Civil War” explores the experiences of disabled veterans and their role as symbols of a fractured nation. The six-panel display features reproduced images of artifacts and rare photographs that depict disabled soldiers and veterans, battlefield surgery and medical personnel as it portrays the courage of disabled veterans to overcome amputations and limb loss. (Please note that the display includes graphic images that some may find disturbing.)

Marvin Library Learning Commons Multipurpose Room (MPR)

Paul Supley discusses Civil War medical hygiene, disease, wounds, and treatments, as well as the Union’s military medical structure and civilian aid organizations. Supley presents in Civil War costume, and uses props and audience participation to demonstrate various medical procedures of the era. Supley is active in regional military reenactment groups and has appeared in film as a Civil War soldier.
