Local Agencies Award Grants to College Programs

I am pleased to announce that Hudson Valley Community College and the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation recently received several grants to support our programs and our students.

The New York State Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) granted $130,421 to expand the college’s solar workforce training initiative at the TEC-SMART facility. This funding will support the college’s existing U.S. Department of Energy grant, which provides equipment to train new instructors and our students ultimately to join the solar workforce. Thank you Penny Hill, Associate Dean at TEC-SMART, for your help in submitting the proposal.

The Bender Scientific Fund of The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region awarded $9,811 to purchase an aquatic tank research system to raise zebrafish in the college’s teaching laboratories. Zebrafish have the ability to regenerate fins, skin, the heart, and the brain (in larval stages) and will be used for studies in vertebrate development and gene function, as well as environmental science. This tank is widely used in research and industrial laboratories. Thank you Dr. Peter Schaefer for your work on this proposal.

Two local foundations — The McCarthy Charities and The Stewart’s Holiday Match — donated $1,500 and $1,750, respectively, to support tuition assistance for the college’s Summer Youth Programs. These programs serve local school-aged children (ages 6 through high school) through a wide range of educational, athletic, and cultural enrichment experiences that build important academic and life skills. Tuition assistance is provided to children who are from families challenged by socioeconomic conditions.
