I’ve uploaded what I consider a great article:

https://acadweb.hvcc.edu/~m.engle/Boaler_VisualMathematics.pdf

The article deals with using visual representations in mathematics, including counting with your fingers.

“Researchers found that when 6-year-olds improved the quality of their finger representation, they improved in arithmetic knowledge, particularly subitizing, counting and number ordering. Remarkably the 6-year-old’s finger representation was a better predictor of future mathematics success than their scores on tests of cognitive processing.”
