Matt Howe makes presentation at NACADA Region 1 Conference

Matt Howe, coordinator of Testing, Advising and Academic Placement, recently made a presentation at the NACADA Region 1 Conference in Newport, Rhode Island.

His presentation, titled Academic Advisor Training and Development in Three-Part Harmony, showcased the Academic Advising Certificate offered through the Center for Effective Teaching here at Hudson Valley Community College.

The 18 hour Academic Advising Certificate offers academic advisors and other professional members of the College’s advising community the opportunity to customize their advising techniques to meet individual advisement responsibilities.

NACADA has consistently advocated for the need to provide academic advisors with on-going training, development, recognition and support. The Advising Certificate is of particular interest to NACADA members as it focuses on three components: Foundations of Advising, Advising Special Groups, and Advising Tools and Resources.

The presentation brought participants through the design, development, and implementation of an advisor training and development program that brings not just advisors to the conversation but the larger institution-wide advising community as a whole. Participants learned how both the support for this program was garnered and the completion of this program resulted in significant recognition. It serves as the college’s campus-wide award with recipients being highlighted not only at annual Honors Convocations, but also by being listed on NACADA’s website as a Campus Advising Award Winner.
