Know What to Do When a Student Is in Crisis
SUNY is continuing free access to the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) mental health crisis intervention training that was announced in May, and resulted in a doubling of the number of faculty and staff on its 64 campuses with QPR training.
QPR mental health crisis intervention training teaches three simple steps for responding when someone mentions suicidal thoughts or shares that they are struggling with suicidal ideation: Question, Persuade, Refer. The training takes less than an hour and could ultimately save a life.
All SUNY employees can enroll in the training program for free, and receive a two-year certification.
QPR is not meant to make you a mental health professional. Just like CPR, QPR is meant to save lives by teaching us all how to respond in those critical moments of crisis, according to Kyle Adams, SUNY assistant vice chancellor for Marketing and Creative Strategy.
“In a recent survey of student attitudes toward mental health resources, 61% identified training faculty in mental health support strategies as the #1 way their campus can improve mental health services and support,” Adams said. “Let’s listen and help make that happen. I encourage everyone to make some time for this training in the next few weeks so we can be a stronger campus community when the fall semester starts.”
Here’s how to sign up:
Go to the QPR account page.
Enter “SUNY” in the “Organization Code” field.
Create your free training account using your @hvcc.edu email address.
Follow the instructions to complete the training.
