Middle States Minute – Groundhog Day

Legend holds that how the groundhog emerges from his den on Feb. 2 will indicate how many days of winter remain. The groundhog may see only the world around him, which means Spring arrives, as it should, on March 20. However, the groundhog saw his shadow and was frightened back into his burrow (as happened this morning — Feb 2, 2022). This is believed to be a sign that winter will last another six-and-a-half weeks

Readers may recall the movie Groundhog Day where the main character is repeating the same day over and over and over. Every day he wakes up in a world he can’t control, but one in which he can make different choices for himself than the day before. He attempts an endless string of re-take after re-take on this day in his life, finding that he can learn even if the world doesn’t remember. The process allows him to develop as a character. At first, his flaws are his undoing because his default short-term focus is meaningless, leaving him and everyone else unfulfilled. Eventually however, the main character finds redemption by embracing a long-term strategy of continuous improvement. The daily effort of making each day at least a little better than the day before is worth it!

We all might be tempted to focus on our shadow, our past and our fears. Instead, we at HVCC believe in transformation. We help our students everyday in their efforts to become better versions of themselves. We work together daily to be the best college we can be.
