For online classes, how does an instructor know who their students are?
At our college, students are authenticated by faculty:
Minimally, by requiring the use of HVCC email and using Blackboard (soon to be D2L Brightspace) as the primary repository and access point for course content, assessment, and activities. Students use their HVCC ID and password process to securely access course content and assessments.
Additionally, instructors might use one or more of the following to authenticate students:
- Recorded exam or test submissions
- Instructor proctored assessments
- Routine interactions via email, phone and Zoom
- Synchronous virtual class, small group meetings, and individual student meetings
- Student-created videos and video assignments
