Last month, the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) offered the Mind Science of Bias workshop, which was cancelled due to the weather. The EOC has rescheduled the workshop for Wednesday, May 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The following is more information on the workshop.
The Mind Science of Bias
We are social beings drawn to some people and not to others. As it turns out, we are not always aware of what is underneath our reactions to other people. Implicit bias is the term used to describe these unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that impact how we understand the world, how we respond to other people, the decisions we make, and how we perform. Not only do these biases influence how we see and respond to others, they impact how we see ourselves.
This workshop focuses on the mind science of bias and explores the concepts of implicit and explicit bias – what they are, their significance, as well as the strategies to overcome and manage them. The concepts of social cognition, racial anxiety, stereotype threat, and cross system relevance will also be addressed along with the leadership implications of each of these topics.
Gregory Owens has worked for New York State for over 30 years. He is a licensed master social worker, who has served as a trainer and consultant in leadership development, mentoring, cultural competence, mastering difficult conversations, and effective approaches for working with young Black males. His expertise has assisted school districts, police departments, dispute resolution centers, and the NYS Unified Courts.
