Dr. Geehan opened meeting and introduced new committee member, Dr. Ann Geisendorfer.
Dr. Geehan provided handouts of the Institutional Effectiveness Report. Committee members discussed the Retention Chart and the possible reasons for our percentage increase in Fall 2018-2019. The Excelsior Scholarship and its possible effects were discussed. A suggestion was made to look at retention from the department level. Discussed The IPEDS definition of First Time – Full Time Student also were discussed. The committee discussed the value in capturing groups such as part-time students that fall outside this definition. A suggestion made and accepted to add Part-Time Matriculated students to the report.
It was brought to the committee’s attention that Dutchess CC, Rockland CC and Westchester CC, whose retention numbers are higher than ours, already have the Guided Pathways Initiative. A comment made: until we know who we are losing and why, we can’t combat the retention issue. Grant work that has been done to collect data in this area was mentioned. Question: is there data on students who were academically unprepared, removed themselves from their program and then went into remedial courses? The CRM was discussed. Christine Smith said she would bring this topic up with the Retention Committee.
The committee discussed Goal 3 — Student Retention by Ethnicity. Dr. Geehan recommends the Retention Committee examine this.
Committee discussed Goal 2 — Student Enrollment.
The meeting was adjourned at 2 p.m.
