Engaging Gen Z Learners:
Assignments & Activities for Authentic Learning
Tuesday, Feb.25 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
MRV Multipurpose Room
Generation Z has taken over college classrooms and is demanding a different approach to assessing their knowledge. Unlike previous students, Gen Z students are private, entrepreneurial, and career-driven. Living in a world surrounded by information, they struggle to see the value of traditional multiple-choice tests or term-paper assessments. Instead, they emphasize practical understanding and transferable skills. This real-world focus mandates the integration of applied, actionable, and authentic assessments. In this webinar, we explore innovative, engaging activities and assignments that engage and inspire today’s Gen Z students.

— Design authentic assessments that engage Gen Z learners
— Integrate hands-on activities and simulations in the classroom
— Utilize performance assessment to gauge learning
— Implement group work in a manner amenable to the preferences of Gen Z students
— Develop self- and peer-assessment techniques to motivate personal growth for Gen Z students
— Utilize assignment options to tailor learning tasks for individual students
— Integrate assessments that allow for a diverse demonstration of knowledge and skills

Addressing Implicit Bias & Microaggressions
to Create an Inclusive Classroom & Campus Community
Tuesday, March 10 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
BTC Meeting Room 2
Racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination and prejudice toward marginalized and underrepresented groups are pervasive in our society and sometimes manifest as implicit bias and microaggressions. Implicit bias is the unconscious, automatic, and instantaneous association of stereotypes or attitudes towards particular groups of people, while microaggressions are the everyday indignities and insults and offensive hidden messages inflicted upon people of color and other marginalized and minority groups. Implicit biases and microaggressions have a negative impact on academic and workplace performance and psychological well-being and should be the subject of an open and honest dialogue in a higher education environment. This webinar examines implicit biases and microaggressions and relates examples that have recently been covered in the news media. Participants will reflect on the implicit biases and microaggressions that they may have experienced themselves as well as expressed towards others. They will also leverage their increased awareness and understanding to respond effectively when interacting with students and others.

— Recognize implicit biases and associations
— Understand microaggressions and how they negatively impact marginalized groups
— Increase awareness of ethnocentrism and privilege
— Identify beliefs, emotions, and/or behaviors that contribute to implicit biases and
microaggressions
— Leverage increased awareness and understanding to reduce the expressions of implicit
biases and microaggressions
— Foster increased classroom and campus inclusiveness, empowerment, and engagement

Designing Effective Rubrics: How To Align Learning Outcomes,
Instructional Activities & Course Assignments
Wednesday, April 8 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
BTC Meeting Room 1
Rubrics provide an efficient means for faculty to improve student learning, facilitate communication with students, and enhance academic quality. The construction of grading rubrics provides a systematic means by which faculty can align learning outcomes, instructional activities, learning competencies and course assignments. Not only does this process inform instructional practices so that faculty can ensure classroom activities support the target learning outcomes, but the integration of rubrics as “feed-forward” information provides students with clear expectations to guide their work. Further, the integration of rubrics facilitates timely, efficient grading of student assignments in a manner that is consistent, clear and detailed. Participants will explore various types of rubrics and learn how to design, integrate and utilize rubrics to foster student learning.

— Construct a rubric that identifies learning competencies and differentiates performance levels
— Integrate rubrics as a component of assignment guidelines to provide “feed-forward” information
— Utilize rubric outcome information to enhance teaching and learning
— Enhance teaching and student learning by aligning learning outcomes, instructional activities, learning competencies and course assignments
— Differentiate the purpose, utility and value of various types of rubrics
