New (and improved?) Middle States Reaccreditation Process

Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) member and candidate institutions have approved the Commission’s revised Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation.

The revised standards, which have been approved by the full Commission and which will be launched this fall, were developed by a Steering Committee comprised of administrators and faculty from member institutions with input from attendees at the Commission’s 2013 and 2014 Town Hall meetings, the 2013 Annual Conference, and via more than 400 written comments.

The number of standards, previously at 14, has been reduced to seven, and the 10-year Institutional Self-Study and Evaluation Team Visit cycle will now be an eight-year cycle. The current Annual Institutional Profile will be replaced with a more detailed Annual Institutional Update, and instead of a five-year Periodic Review Report, the institution will undergo a Mid-Point Peer Review. A basic outline of the changes is presented in a side-by-side comparison chart.

MSCHE will be hosting a Town Hall in Albany in October to present the proposed changes in the process and cycle. Several members of the Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness Committee will be attending the Town Hall to learn more about the changes and will share what they have learned with the campus community.
