The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and Student Activities Office will be scheduling monthly campus visits by the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) of Rensselaer County. NOEP connects eligible students with the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) that offers a monthly stipend for purchasing nutritious food. The project will help Hudson Valley Community College’s neediest students with the application and re-certification process, according to Connie Neidrauer-Brown, Contract Manager for Hunger Solutions of New York, Inc. that oversees the program.
The NOEP Coordinator will be on campus Wednesday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first floor of the Siek Campus Center.
The college also provides a student food pantry, located at the Student Activities Office in Campus Center 210, and a clothing closet, which is located off the Maureen Stapleton Theatre lobby. These sources for free food and clothing are vital services that help stabilize and enhance the circumstances of many of our students, according to Alfredo Balarin, assistant director of Student Life and EOP. Balarin said food insecurity is a growing problem in society that the campus’s food pantry strives to alleviate. The clothing closet offers students appropriate attire for job interviews and the workplace.
For more information on donating to the food pantry or clothing closet, please contact the Student Activities Office at (518) 629-7348.
