Nursing and Dental Hygiene Students Collaborate

On April 7, students from Hudson Valley Community College Departments of Nursing and Dental Hygiene gave a collaborative in service to students and faculty at St. Coleman’s School in Watervliet.

St. Coleman’s School serves students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other related disabilities. Nursing students discussed the importance of overall nutrition in health, and the Dental Hygiene students discussed how overall health and oral health are connected to being happy and healthy. Dental Hygiene students also provided a hands-on portion of the visit, reviewing toothbrush techniques and special therapy aides for those students with physical disabilities.

One highlight of the event was the “egg-speriment.” Three eggs were put in different solutions — water, vinegar and cola — students and faculty were able to see how these liquids affected the hard outer shell of the eggs, by weakening the shell and also staining.

Thank you students in both programs for your efforts in helping this special needs program in our community!
