In partnership with Oakwood Cemetery, the Col. George L. Willard Camp #154, Department of New York Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has reconstructed and repaired parts of the gravesite of Civil War Hero and “Rock of Chickamauga,” General George Thomas. Elements of the original fence and finials were restored, the surroundings were cleared of environmental hazards and the descriptive tablet about General Thomas was raised off the ground.
On Saturday, July 31st – the anniversary of Thomas’s 1816 birthday – Oakwood Cemetery and the Col. George L. Willard Camp # 154, Department of New York, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will rededicate the gravesite. A ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon in Section I-1. Reservations are required by calling (518) 328-0090.

Posting and retiring of the Colors and playing of Taps
Musical performances
A rifle salute
Costumed reenactors
A brief history of General Thomas and the gravesite restoration project
Light refreshments and more…
