ODEI partners with “She’s a Boss”

Our history is filled with pioneers like social activists and former Congress woman Shirley Chisholm, lawmakers such as Kamala Harris, athletes like Naomi Osaka, mathematicians like Mary Jackson whose experience was captured in the movie Hidden Figures, Native American artist Helen Hardin, and Dolores Huerta co-founder of the United Farm Workers. All of these women as diverse as their fields are were supported and mentored by someone helping them navigate life’s challenges as they pursued their goals. Mentors play a vital role in our development and career growth.

Having a mentor in college is vital to experiencing success. Recognizing this, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) has partnered with She’s a Boss (SaB) Women in Leadership (WIL) program to support several underrepresented minority young ladies as they complete their course work at Hudson Valley and transfer to four-year institutions. The program was founded by a young entrepreneur, Liska Wilson who has benefited from having mentors in her life.

The She’s a Boss WIL program is intended to help collegiate women of color rise and shine in their careers. Their mentors are people who will introduce the mentees to new opportunities, provide career guidance, help them to problem solve and overcome hurdles, and give them space to explore career interests. Not only will mentees graduate from the program with tangible knowledge, skills, experiences, and connections, but they will also develop more confidence in themselves and their abilities. In short, students who are a part of this program will be transformed and inspired.

Visit the ODEI website in the Community Conversations section (https://anchor.fm/odeilive/) to learn more about this woman in leadership. The podcast is available beginning Monday, March 29, 2021.
