Overhead Lineworker program benefits from National Grid donation

Students in the college’s Overhead Line Worker certificate program, which has been training students to enter the utility field for nearly a decade, rely heavily on the safety equipment they use in the field. When your job is to climb poles all day, comfortable and safe harnesses and gear are a must.

But the program’s in-house safety equipment has seen nearly 10 years of hard use and needed replacement. That’s where National Grid, who was instrumental in helping develop the program, came in. On Jan 18, representatives from National Grid came to campus to present a $15,000 check to Department Chair Brittany Kitterman and Assistant Professor Rich Porter.

A grant proposal was submitted by the college to National Grid to upgrade the equipment used in ECMN 191 Electric Power Overhead Construction. Grant funds will pay for new fall arrest harnesses, leather gaff pads and straps, positioning belts and splinter guards. The purpose of this grant is to offer our students the same, better functioning equipment currently used by National Grid.
