All interested parties are invited to join the HVCC Chemistry Club on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 2 pm in SCI 385 to view an American Chemical Society (ACS) virtual presentation entitled “Picture Perfect Chemistry: Laboratory Imaging and Photography”. This presentation is part of the ACS Program-in-a-Box series and will include participant materials shared with our chapter by the ACS.
This ACS presentation will be hosted by Kasha Patel. Host Kasha Patel returns after hosting the online chemistry game show “ChemClash: Rival Reactions” in 2021 with ACS. She produces science-themed comedy shows through her company DC Science Comedy. The presentation also features Enrique Gomez from The Pennsylvania State University and Huiwang Ai from the University of Virginia. Dr. Gomez’s research focuses on connecting the chemical structure of soft materials to macroscopic properties for the advancement of a sustainable society. Prof. Gomez will introduce electron microscopy, describe the benefits of cryogenic electron microscopy (CryoEm), including how he uses CryoEM techniques to capture images of difficult samples. Fluorescence imaging typically involves physically invasive practices to capture biological processes, but Dr. Ai is developing less invasive techniques that will enable better images of the brain, cancer cells, and potentially any biological process to learn how they work. Prof. Ai will introduce his work engineering proteins to create bioluminescent markers that can be imaged to track biological processes in the body.
While not required to attend any of our meetings, all interested HVCC students (and faculty/staff) are encouraged to stay up to date with all HVCC Chemistry Club information by enrolling in our Brightspace organization: Log into Brightspace. Choose “Discover” on the Navigation bar. Search for “HVCC Chemistry Club” Click on the tile text. Select either the “Enroll in Course” or “Request Access” option. Once your request has been approved, you will see the HVCC Chemistry Club option in your HVCC Organizations section.
