Professor Tamu Chambers invited to present at conference in Ghana

 

Tamu Chambers, a professor in the Department of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences, is invited to present at the African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA) second Biennial Conference upcoming Oct. 12 to 14, 2017 at the University of Ghana at Legon in Ghana, Africa.

The abstract for Professor Chambers’ presentation is entitled “21st Century Deconstructing History and Debunking Myths about African and African American Women in Print, Literature and Social Media: Michelle Obama, America’s First African American Lady ‘Talking Back’ – Vanquishing Stereotypes.” The conference theme, “African Studies and Global Politics” is addressed in 40 panels, six plenary sessions and 32 posters sessions selected from the more than 160 proposals submitted.

“This opportunity provides experiential and educational possibilities in enhancing African American History, African History, Cultural Diversity in American Society, as well as my Sociology courses,” Ms. Chambers said. Information and knowledge gained at the conference “regarding Ancient Africa and Ghana, the area in which many Africans were scattered throughout the diaspora, will be shared with the campus community when scheduling diversity, equity and inclusion programs, [and for] curriculum enhancement.”
