PTK members volunteer at the Northeastern Regional Food Bank

Members of the HVCC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society volunteered at the Northeastern Regional Food Bank of NY in Latham on Feb. 28.

Volunteers sorted through hundreds of boxes filled with fruits and vegetables donated by local supermarkets, carefully examining the food to ensure prime quality. There were some interesting findings for this time of year, including pineapples, watermelon, and dragon-fruit! The fruits and vegetables were separated and packed into boxes to be distributed to local charities, food pantries and homeless shelters. Any slightly bruised food was not discarded, rather it was collected in a separate bin to be distributed to local farms for animal consumption.

The PTK volunteers brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm while helping to make a difference. This was a great opportunity to meet other chapter members and strengthen their fellowship. This was also an important service opportunity because it was providing fresh, healthy food to those in need. Seeing the thousands of pounds of food donated that day made us all reflect on how much food is wasted and how important the work at the food bank really is.
