Race Away Stigma

This past Saturday (Oct. 18), the Center for Counseling and Transfer sponsored its sixth annual Race Away Stigma 5K Race and Fun Walk. Despite the somewhat inclement weather, a total of 119 runners and walkers participated with almost half of those being our own staff and students. Congratulations to Sarah Popovics, our cross country coach, for placing first among females. Race results and photos are posted on our web site here: https://www.hvcc.edu/cct/race.html.

The event included information and representation from the following community agencies: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Equinox, Ellis Medicine, National Alliance for Mental Illness, Parsons Child and Family Center, Rensselaer County Department of Mental Health and Samaritan Hospital.

Several college staff members supported the event by either participating in the race/walk or volunteering their time to help with the day’s activities. In particular, we want to acknowledge the following departments for their support: Center for Academic Engagement, Center for Careers and Employment and Student Activities.

We are espcecially appreciative of our students who helped make this event a success: Student Senate for generously funding the healthy assortment of refreshments, as well as our peer educators and several football players for volunteering their time.

Finally, a special thank you to VP Alex Popovics for supporting our event with his presence each year.
