What’s Happening:
On Feb. 11, the New York State Coalition for Students with Disabilities will be hosting a rally at the NYS Capitol. A proposal has been made to legislators, with the support of the New York State Education Department, for funds for “Enhanced Supports” for students with disabilities in higher education. Many of you may not realize that the amount of funding provided to NYS college students has not changed in decades. These funds would go directly toward additional programs and initiatives to help students with disabilities in colleges across the state.
This is only happening once and we need your participation! Please consider spending time with us at the Capitol on Monday, Feb. 11 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. All we ask is for your attendance, but we welcome any level of involvement you are willing to provide. We will be joined by people from across the state but we are the closest participants. The more people that are present, whether they are students with disabilities or not, demonstrates to our legislators that people with disabilities matter and are worth this investment.
How to Sign-up
The Not A Bit Of Difference Club will be providing bus transportation from Hudson Valley Community College to the Capitol on Feb. 11. The bus will depart from the HVCC campus at 8:45 am. You can sign up for a seat on the bus at the Center for Access and Assistive Technology in Siek Campus Center Room 130 or by contacting us via email or phone (see below). If you cannot commit for the entire rally, you can still attend. Please contact us to let us know your plans and so we can include you in the communications about that day.
But What If I Have Class??:
DeAnne Martocci, director of the Center for Access and Assistive Technology (CAAT), will be contacting all faculty and staff to make them aware of this event and our need for your attendance. If you need assistance in requesting an “excused absence” that day, please reach out to us as soon as possible.
I’m Still Not Sure
We encourage any and all questions that you have about this event. Please contact either Annie Petersen or Andrea Petley at the CAAT office, Siek Campus Center, room 130; by phone at 518-629-7154, or via email at a.petersen@hvcc.edu or a.petley@hvcc.edu.
Forward this information and spread the word! We need you to be there and show solidarity. The need for support of students with disabilities in higher education has never been greater than it is now!
