The National Collegiate Honors Council Conference held in Dallas, Nov. 2 through 5, brought together Honors administrators, faculty, staff and students from both two-year and four-year institutions. The theme of the conference, “Centering Community,” addressed how to build up diverse groups of engaged learners, how to create inclusive communities and how an Honors education can forge connections regionally, nationally and globally. Through various workshops and themed sessions, attendees had the opportunity to engage and learn about the principles and dynamics of the Honors community.
In the spirit of “Centering Community,” conference attendees participated in a service project to paint a mural at Kirkpatrick Middle School. Kirkpatrick is a unique school outside of Dallas that serves as an English language immersion school for refugee students and creates a community for those who have immigrated to the United States. The NCHC participants helped complete a beautiful, colorful mural depicting the different nations that refugees came from with the bold words painted: “You Belong Here.”
The conference provided an outstanding Honors experience and exemplified the creativity, collaboration, and leadership that promotes a true sense of community. The National Collegiate Honors Council is a unique educational organization designed to support and promote undergraduate Honors education. It provides its members with resources, training opportunities and collaborative events to build and sustain Honors programs and their curriculum.
