This is a reminder that the process in WIReD to identify students to receive Early Alert notices – the Early Warning System– is open for the Spring semester. Faculty members are encouraged to use the EWS to contact students who are inattentive, unprepared for or do not participate in discussions, fail to turn in assignments or perform poorly on early assignments and tests.
Currently, students referred through the EWS receive a communication from the Retention Unit (faculty choice of either a call, e-mail, or letter) advising them to contact their instructor or another office designated by the instructor, and begin to formulate a plan for success before it is too late. Faculty can also choose to identify students about which they have concerns, but request that “no action be taken at this time”.
In addition to encouraging your use of the EWS, we’d like to take a moment to answer the following question:
Why should faculty submit an EWS referral asking that no action be taken?
The Retention Unit recognizes and values faculty who prefer to handle these students on their own and use their own methods of intervention. The Unit would like these faculty to use the Early Warning System to inform us that there is an awareness of an issue and that it is being handled by the instructor. This will allow us to recognize faculty retention efforts and to report our institutional retention data more accurately, as well as help us collectively document the successes of the efforts and programs on campus.
