Scott Kellogg of Radix Added to Earth Week Event Schedule

Scott Kellogg, owner of Radix, an ecological sustainability center based in Albany, discusses his latest urban sustainability projects in two consecutive talks in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center on Tuesday, April 23. The presentation is part of ongoing Earth Week activities at the college. Taking place at noon to 12:50 p.m. and again at 1 to 1:50 p.m., the talks focus on hydroponics, urban gardens, rainwater collection/purification and composting. A teacher, activist and ecological designer, Kellogg opened Radix in 2009 to demonstrate environmental technologies and sustainable micro-industries for today’s urban environment. He is the author, along with Susan Pettigrew, of “Toolbox for Sustainable City Living: A Do-It-Ourselves Guide.”

The Earth Day celebration on Thursday, April 25 features eco-friendly vendors, environmental demonstrations and information, a seed and plant exchange and a cell phone collection booth.

On that day, Bill Reinhardt, former senior project manager at NYSERDA and cofounder of SustaiNYSERDA, discusses how peak oil and climate change issues will affect the potential career paths of students in a talk titled, “Energy, Environment and a Sustainable Economy: What Does This Mean for Today’s Students?” Taking place from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium, Reinhardt’s talk is sponsored by the college’s Voices committee and is the last in its spring 2013 series of lectures.

In conjunction with Earth Day, the Sustainability Committee is sponsoring an Electronics Recycling event on Friday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot off Holliday Drive (next to BTC). Recycle used electronics free of charge.

The Sustainability Committee is now collecting seeds, bulbs and small rooted plants for the Earth Day exchange. All must be non-invasive species, preferably natives, and seeds must be no more than one year old. Contact Maxine Ortiz at 629-7787 or m.ortiz@hvcc.edu to arrange for drop-off/pick up of your donations any time before Earth Day.

Cell phones collected on Earth Day will be sold to Verizon Wireless. Those that include installed sim cards, chargers and accessories can be reconditioned and donated to victims of domestic violence; phones without these items will be recycled. All proceeds from this effort will be donated to the college’s food pantry. Contact Carlene Sheehan at 629-7311 or c.sheehan@hvcc.edu for more information.
