The Sustainability Committee is collecting seeds and rooted plants for an exchange taking place as part of Earth Day events at the college on Thursday, April 25.
Please contact Maxine Ortiz at 629-7787 or m.ortiz@hvcc.edu to arrange for drop-off/pick up of contributions any time before Earth Day. All must be non-invasive, preferably native species, and seeds must be no more than one year old.

“Energy, Environment and a Sustainable Economy: What Does This Mean for Today’s Students?”

Bill Reinhardt, former senior project manager at NYSERDA and cofounder of SustaiNYSERDA, discusses how peak oil and climate change issues will affect the potential career paths of students. Reinhardt explains future energy and environmental challenges, their impact on local and global economies and their effects on educational opportunities. His talk focuses on how college students can best plan their education in anticipation of this changing economy. A question and answer session follows the presentation. Reinhardt’s appearance was arranged through Voices: A Library Lecture Series and is open to the public.
Special Note: Cell Phone Collection
The Sustainability Committee also is collecting used cell phones to be sold to Verizon Wireless. Cell phones that include installed sim cards, chargers and accessories can be reconditioned and reused; phones without these items will be recycled. All proceeds from this collection effort will be donated to the college’s food pantry.
