Serving in the community over Spring Break

On March 28 and 29 a handful of Hudson Valley students, as well as some faculty and staff, participated in a local service opportunity with the South End Children’s Café.

The Café, which opened in 2015, focuses on serving the youth and families of the South End. The kids enrolled in the program receive homework help and after school enrichment programs on a daily basis. These services are provided by volunteers and as part of the service over spring break initiative, Hudson Valley students were able to offer their time and talents.

After homework and some fun, both the kids and their families sit down to a healthy meal provided by the Café. Soon after dinner, the day comes to a close and the kids depart; 15 of the 25 youth who benefit from the South End Children’s Café are currently homeless. The work of the South End Children’s Café, their volunteers and founder, Traci Kellar, is clearly meeting a critical need in the community.

Many thanks to the students, faculty and staff who signed up to volunteer over the two days. It was great to serve alongside you!

This service initiative was organized by the Campus Ministry and supported by Student Activities. May this be the start of a new spring break tradition!
