The State Fire Marshal will be starting the college’s annual inspection on Monday, Nov. 18. Please be aware of the following items that are cited every year:
Power Strips and Extension Cords
Power strips MUST be plugged into the wall outlet, you cannot plug power strips and extension cords into each other.
Extension cords are for temporary use only and MUST be unplugged when not in use.
Extension cords cannot have a multi tap on the end (single plug only).
Household extension cords and other multi-taps are NOT allowed on campus.
Microwaves, Toaster Ovens, Heaters
The three listed above and other household applicances MUST be plugged directly into wall outlets.
When using a heater, it must not be under the desk and must be clear of all combustible materials
All heater purchases must be approved by Environmental Health and Safety and Facilities Management.
Wax warmers are NOT allowed on campus.
Storage
In areas with sprinklers, items must be at least 18 inches below sprinkler head.
In areas without sprinklers, items must be 24 inches below the ceiling.
Excessive storage — especially of combustible materials — should be kept to a minimum.
Fire-rated doors should NOT be propped open, especially hallway and stairwell doors.
Housekeeping
Generally, make sure areas are clean and organized.
