The recent violence and destruction in the Middle East have caused a devastating effect both in the region and throughout the world. As a college community, we stand in support of all victims and those who have lost loved ones, as well as with our students, faculty and local community members who are suffering at this time.
We understand that members of our community may be experiencing a wide range of emotions, such as anger, anxiety or fear. Please know that we have support services to help, including licensed mental health counselors for students at our Counseling and Wellness Services office and also through the Employee Assistance Program for faculty and staff. Members of the college community also have access to the Interfaith Prayer Room located on the second floor of the Siek Campus Center for quiet reflection or prayer.
Sadly, at college campuses across the nation, there are reports of rising anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, hate speech and threats of violence. Fortunately, we have NOT seen such behavior here at Hudson Valley, but if you witness or experience inappropriate behavior, please report it to Public Safety at (518) 629-7210.
Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, hatred, bigotry, discrimination or violence of any sort have no place within our community and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. As SUNY Chancellor John King stated recently, “We will do everything in our power to live up to the ideals of community and inclusivity that make SUNY a secure and thriving environment in which all our students can learn and grow.” The chancellor’s message is one that Hudson Valley supports completely.
Our college will continue to work with our region’s faith-based leaders to foster new partnerships that lead to increased levels of access and understanding. If you have thoughts or suggestions to share related to increased inclusivity within our community, please contact Vice President for Student Affairs Louis Coplin at (518) 629-7307 or l.coplin@hvcc.edu.
Sincerely,
Roger Ramsammy, Ph.D.
