STEM High School Student Honored

HVCC & Questar III STEM High School sophomore Shayla Hense, who is currently pursuing the Health Science Certificate pathway, was recently honored.

Hense earned first place for New York State in the scenario writing category for the Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI). Her essay was titled “An Unfortunate Passing.”

The scenario writing component provides students an opportunity to tell an original story based on one of the topics for the current competition season.

Shayla chose Robotic Workforce as her topic. Writers develop a creative narrative to entertain and inform readers as they portray awareness and imaginings about possible futures. Scenarios must take place at least 20 years in the future and futuristic concepts and trends are incorporated in the scenario.

In June, Shayla will compete at the international competition at UMASS Amherst.

Special thanks to STEM High Teacher Melanie Powzyk and Sarah Fiess, director of New York Future Problem Solving.

Congratulations to Shayla!
