Two distinguished awards within the reach of students are the David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship , open only to CUNY and SUNY community college students, and the Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research, a prestigious Hudson Valley Community College Foundation award.
The 2015 theme of the David A. Garfinkel Essay Scholarship is LGBT: The Road to Equality – How have the New York courts addressed equal human rights for the LGBT community? Alumnus Elijah Fagan-Solis, a student of Criminal Justice Professor Kathryn Sullivan, was the 2008 recipient of this award with his essay entitled, “The Courts and Human Rights in New York: The Legacy of the Lemmon Slave Case.” Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit an essay for consideration, the deadline is April 1, 2015. The Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer Award for Excellence in Library Research recipient is selected every spring from faculty nominations across academic departments. The recipient receives an award in the amount of $150, recognition at Student Honors and commencement, and his/her name is inscribed on a plaque in the Dwight Marvin Library. Faculty librarians evaluate submissions based on the following criteria:
Award selection criteria:
- Extensive bibliography with minimum of five sources and various formats, such as books, ebooks, academic journals, news articles, interview, credible website
- Evidence of initiative, persistence, and ingenuity in identifying sources
- Evidence of critical thinking in evaluating sources for credibility and appropriateness
- Correct citation format
- Authentic academic work, free of plagiarism (papers may be reviewed using turnitin.com or similar software)
- The work nominated must have received a grade of A from the nominating faculty member.
