Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society for two-year colleges, as recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges. It was established in 1918, and has a presence on almost 1,300 community college campuses in 11 nations. The mission of PTK is to recognize the academic achievement of college students and provide opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders.
The Alpha Xi Sigma Chapter of PTK at Hudson Valley Community College actively fosters the four hallmarks: scholarship, service, fellowship and leadership. In the past year, members of PTK have initiated several projects connected to those hallmarks. They worked with the Communications and Marketing department to survey HVCC students to better understand their motivations and college perceptions, they collaborated with the PTK chapter at FMCC to address food insecurity in local counties by volunteering at the Northeastern Regional Food Bank “Help Hunger Appeal” at Crossgates Mall and they hosted the “Hicks Strong Hug Mug” event to raise awareness about mental health in the military. Members of PTK also attended regional conferences where they connected with other NY chapters, developed leadership skills and learned about scholarship opportunities.
Students eligible for PTK membership were recently sent invitations to join. The eligibility requirements for our chapter are: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.60, matriculation into a program at HVCC and completion of 12 credit hours of college level work. There is a one-time membership fee that comes with access to PTK benefits for life. Member benefits include: access to $46 million in transfer scholarships, awards specifically for career-bound students, career training courses, leadership training courses, and so much more!
