Students to Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity over Spring Break

Every year colleges across the country travel to join with Habitat for Humanity International to help the working poor by building houses one at a time.  This year, I am proud to report, that our Student Senate has decided they want to be a part of this nationwide event.  As a result they are offering our students the opportunity to go to Melbourne, Florida to assist the Brevard Habitat chapter put on their annual Strawberry Festival.  This event raises over $250,000 in one weekend and funds this chapter’s work throughout the year.  They hold a 5k race, an antique car show and hundreds of crafters and utilize over 1000 volunteers to run this festival.

As the Habitat for Humanity Club Advisor I have had the privilege of working Chad Coumbes and the Student Senate on organizing this trip.  It was wonderful to see our students asking to spend their spring break volunteering to help others.  However our trip cannot happen if we don’t get the word out. Having just been approved by FSA, it is imperative that we now let our students know.  Your assistance in publicizing the trip will be appreciated.  If interested, students should sign up at the student senate offices.   Six students have already signed up but we are looking for ten more.  The cost is still being worked out, but to help make this trip affordable, student senate will pay for 40% of the cost per student.  We will fly out Friday March 16th, volunteer Saturday, Sunday and Monday and take Tuesday to relax.  Melbourne is on the Atlantic Ocean so a day at the beach is a real possibility. However it is also close to Cape Kennedy and many other attractions.  We fly back on Wednesday. Each student who goes to Florida will receive a Habitat for Humanity t-shirt (see logo above) designed by HVCC student and Habitat Club Member Alexandra Cardish.  In addition student senate is offering one scholarship.  To apply you must write a 300 word essay; the best one will receive a free trip.

For those who cannot afford the cost of going away I have also arranged spring break volunteer opportunities locally.  We will build on Alexander Street in the South end of Albany.  Interested students should contact me directly since to participate.  No one may participate in a build until they have signed a hold harmless agreement.  In addition, I am also looking for one or two faculty to volunteer at our local build with our students as I will be in Florida chaperoning the Student Senate trip. Students volunteering locally may purchase our t-shirt at cost. However without faculty support this local opportunity may not happen.

For more information contact me, Sue Kilgallon.  I am the HVCC Habitat for Humanity club advisor at the college.  My e-mail is s.kilgallon@hvcc.edu, my office is Lang 107 and my office number is 629-8005. Anything you can do to get the word out to our students will be appreciated!
