SUNY Still Seeking Colleges to Assist With Sandy Aftermath

As you know, many campuses aided in the immediate recovery efforts in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy—from providing shelter to acting as the staging grounds for recovery efforts, SUNY provided critical services for New Yorkers after the storm. Although the immediate work is behind us, rebuilding the communities affected by the storm will be a much longer process—one which will need the hands of many.

SUNY Central Coordinator of Community Relations Elise Newkirk has established a partnership with the American Red Cross to support these long-term efforts, and we will need the support of all our campuses to provide these areas with the help they need to get back on their feet. The American Red Cross has prioritized three areas of need: blood donation, financial donation, and volunteerism. Blood drives previously scheduled on campuses are more important than ever as blood supplies run low; financial donations allow the Red Cross to continue aiding victims; and volunteers are needed in the affected areas to distribute aid.

SUNY has set up a Web site to direct interested students, faculty, staff, and alumni on how to get involved: www.suny.edu/sandy/

Interested parties may browse volunteer opportunities or make donations directly.
