TEC-SMART part of Green Buildings Open House on Oct. 13

TEC-SMART will be part of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association’s annual Green Buildings Open House on Saturday, Oct. 13. Rich Porter, chair of building technologies department, will be on site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to conduct tours.

Located at 345 Hermes Road in NYSERDA’s STEP Park in Malta,  TEC-SMART (Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies) serves as a community resource for learning about energy efficient design and building techniques. The building incorporates green building techniques, which include the use of solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems as well as passive solar design in construction. With a low carbon footprint and sustainable design features, TEC-SMART is a showcase for energy efficient building principles.  In 2011, it achieved the US Green Building Council’s LEED platinum certification.

Among the sites on the tour are the properties of two HVCC retirees — Howard Stoner and Patty Watt, who have found creative ways to make their homesteads more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
