New features are available for Knowmia users.
On Sept. 29, Techsmith Knowmia began rolling out its new picture-in-picture webcam recording feature. Here are the details from Techsmith:
- After selecting a capture area but before starting the recording, users will now be able to select either Picture-in-Picture (PiP) or Fullscreen mode from the webcam options menu. The menu and PiP webcam preview are shown here:

- Picture-in-Picture is the default webcam mode in the new versions of Capture, and the camera stream will be displayed in the lower right corner of the recording area. As with the traditional fullscreen option, the PiP can be toggled on and off as needed while recording.
Here are some answers to anticipated questions you may have about the new feature:
Q: Can I switch between Picture-in-Picture mode and Fullscreen mode after I’ve started recording?
A: Currently, no. The mode selection is done before recording starts. Once the recording has started, the webcam button on the control bar will simply toggle between showing and hiding the webcam.
Q: Can I resize the webcam, or move it to somewhere else on screen?
A: There are not options for moving or resizing the webcam at launch, but both options are being considered for addition in the future.
Q: What do users need to do to get the new versions of Capture?
A: No action is needed. The recorders will silently update themselves over the next few days, as users run the application. However, if you’d like to start using the new options right away, you can uninstall your current version of Capture and then manually download the new version by visiting your Knowmia site and clicking Launch Capture.
Prior updates of note
Earlier Techsmith Knowmia introduced a few changes you may have noticed already.
1. “Groups” become “Collections”
Knowmia Groups have always been a way to deliver a set of media to a specific group of people, especially in the absence of an LMS. This isn’t changing, but the name is! A switch to Collections will make the feature’s purpose more clear. Each collection can still be followed by others, and even contributed to by others as well. This change also introduces a more straightforward way to manage your collections from your library, without having to visit a separate section of the site. And we’re introducing a personalized “feed” feature as well, which will display the most recent media from all of the collections you follow.

2. Minor interface update for Conversations
Knowmia addresses user feedback on its Conversations feature by giving the commenting interface a minor facelift. Notable changes include:
- All commenting and annotating will be done from the right sidebar, at the top of the comment feed.
- Threading of replies is now visually clearer.
- Sharing options are more prominent when using conversations outside of an LMS.
- Added emoji support for comments. ? ?
