Thanks for supporting the Viking!

Thanks in large part to the efforts of student worker Matt Whalen and his friends, we put up a valiant fight in the second round of the SUNY Mascot Madness, but eventually fell short of our goal of moving on to the third round of competition.

On Wednesday at noon, we trailed the SUNY Oneonta mascot, Red the Dragon, by more than 45 points. Matt, who had staffed a table in the Campus Center the previous day, swung into action and worked into the night to garner the Viking some votes. He visited the Evening Student Reception and even recruited President Matonak and several members of the Board of Trustees to help him encourage students to vote at the reception.

By morning on Thursday we had the same commanding lead on Red the Dragon that he had on us the previous day, but the sleeping dragon of Oneonta awoke, and through the morning our lead slipped away.

Thank you to Matt and all of the faculty, staff and students who voted for the Viking in this year’s Mascot Madness. As Red Sox fans always (used to) say: “There’s always next year.”
