The Evolution of Digital Textbooks is Moving Quickly… Are You Ready?

In addressing the National Press Club on Tuesday, U.S. Education Secretary Anre Duncan called for the nation to move as fast as possible away from printed textbooks and toward digital ones. “Over the next few years, textbooks should be obsolete,” he declared.  “It’s not just a matter of keeping up with the times; it’s about keeping up with other countries whose students are leaving their American counterparts in the dust.”

At Hudson Valley, the Instructional Resources Committee (IRC, a Standing Committee of the Academic Senate) is actively studying the expanded use of digital resources on our campus.  This subcommittee, made up of faculty, librarians and instructional designers, is collecting data on the current campus use of digital learning materials/texts, faculty and student satisfaction with electronic resources, and an assessment of learning outcomes when compared to traditional publisher materials.

Higher Ed’s evolution of e-books and i-books is moving quickly, and all teaching colleagues are urged to remain abreast of how these changes will impact our instruction and assessment of student learning.

Members of the campus community always are welcome to attend the scheduled IRC meetings. The next will be held at 2:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15 in FTZ 251.
