Core Indicator Update
As part of the college’s Institutional Effectiveness process, the college’s Core Indicators and the Core Indicator Future Implementation Schedule included in the 2015 Institutional Effectiveness (IE) Report (https://www.hvcc.edu/secure/staff/assessment/plans/index.html) are reviewed on an annual basis by the Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (AIE) Committee, which consists of representatives from key areas across the campus.
The Core Indicators include such measures as graduation and transfer rates, student enrollment and retention, diversity data (student and employee), distance education enrollment trends, revenue/cost data, grant funding, and Foundation funding. The annual assessment of these core indicators forms the basis of an institutional report card that documents continuous improvement toward the achievement of the college’s mission.
The AIE Committee reviewed both the Core Indicators and the implementation schedule for 2016 and made several changes as a result. Thus far these changes include:
In accordance with the 2015 IE Report’s Core Indicator Future Implementation Schedule the following Core Indicators were added:
Goal 2: 2.4 Student Satisfaction – to assess students’ overall satisfaction with the college. For the 2016 IE Report items from the Student Opinion Survey (SOS) will be utilized.
Goal 3: 3.2 International Students — to assess impact of increased efforts to recruit and enroll more international students as included in the Strategic Enrollment Plan.
The following existing Core Indicators were revised:
Goal 1: 1.7 Employee (Faculty/Staff) Satisfaction — three additional existing items from the Employee Satisfaction Survey were added:
— College efforts to create and maintain open lines of communication with all constituents
— College efforts to enhance the overall educational experiences of students
— Your overall satisfaction with the college
Goal 6: 6.6 Non-credit Revenue (Community and Professional Education) — in addition to Community and Professional Education the following non-credit community-linked services will be assessed: Institutional Services and Events, Viking Video Technologies, and Workforce Development. Assessment measures include, where appropriate, number of courses offered, number of participants enrolled, and number of events for which services were provided.
The following new Core Indicators were added:
Goal 5: 5.4 Physical Plant — to assess faculty/staff and students’ perceptions of the safety, accessibility, and general attractiveness and cleanliness of the campus buildings and grounds. Items will be taken from the Employee Satisfaction Survey and the Student Opinion Survey.
Goal 5: 5.5 Student Loan Default Rate — This Core Indicator has been added due to the growing national and state concern regarding students’ loan obligations.
Other revisions include the addition of headcount and FTE data to Goal 2: 2.1 Student Enrollment, which currently assesses only application yield, and the addition of fees to Goal 5: 5.2 Tuition Rate, which currently compares the tuition rates of regional community colleges.
These changes will be in the 2016 Institutional Effectiveness Report, which will be completed over the summer, reviewed by Senior Staff, and be made available to the campus community early in the fall 2016 semester. The Report also will include updates on progress made on our Middle States Self-Study Recommendations, the use of assessment results in teaching and academic and administrative units, unit plan requests and budget decisions, and updates on the college’s Strategic Enrollment Plan (including New Student Orientation), Strategic Directions and Priorities, the Strategic Technology Plan, and General Education.
We will keep you updated as we move along in our process. Thank you for all your continued participation and feedback!
