THEA 170: Introduction to Improvisational Theatre

Introduction to Improvisational Theatre (THEA 170) will be held Monday and Thursday evenings, May 19 through June 27 (Summer Session 2), in the Maureen Stapleton Theatre.

Introduction to Improvisational Theatre introduces students to the fundamentals of improvisational acting. Theatre games and exercises, intended to free students from the anxiety and mental blocks associated with performing without any prior preparation, will be utilized. Students will work in groups to develop the communicative and cooperative skills needed to confidently participate in the various styles and forms of improvisational theatre. Finally, this course will allow students to develop the skills of listening, observation, impromptu thinking, and expression that are necessary for effective interpersonal communication in work, school, and social situations.

Instructor Joshua Sperber has taught “Introduction to Improvisational
Theatre,” “Creative Writing: Stage and Screen,” as well as public speaking
classes as an instructor at Hudson Valley. He also has served as both an
actor and a director for several local improv troupes, has performed
stand-up comedy at venues throughout the Northeast, and has had plays
produced in the Capital Region. Sperber holds degrees in English, dramaturgy and educational theatre.
