This Week in Athletics
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country: The cross country programs competed at the NJCAA National Championships. Olivia Skystad earned the women’s team’s best finish as she crossed the finish line in 24th place with a time of 21:07. Eva Sgambettera placed 43rd overall and posted a time of 22:19. Rounding out the women’s scores were Laurel Ticer (50th – 23:35), Jessica Wank (64th – 24:53) and Rebecca Seiter (67th – 25:16).
Eric Zumpe paced the men’s team with a 27th place finish. Zumpe tallied a time of 28:36. Jake Kinnicutt placed 56th overall with a time of 30:10 and Adam Blough crossed the line in 66th place overall with a time of 30:33.
Football: The football program dropped a tough game 48-0 against a nationally-ranked Nassau program in Garden City on Saturday. The 2022 football season ends and the Vikings finished the year with a 6-4 record.
Women’s Tennis: Tennis closed out its 2022 season over the weekend as they competed at the NJCAA National Championships in Peachtree, GA.
Women’s Basketball: The women’s basketball team won its 2022 season opener, 93-59, over UConn-Avery Point at the McDonough Sports Complex on Tuesday evening. The Vikings were led by freshman Payton Graber (Schenectady/Schalmont), who filled the stat book with game-highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals. Graber, the all-time leading scorer at Schalmont High School, finished with 33 points on 12-of-25 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc in her first collegiate game. She also tallied game-highs with eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals as the Vikings handled the Pointers with ease to tip-off the new season.
Men’s Basketball: The men’s basketball team were defeated on the road, 96-69, in their season opener against a talented SUNY Orange program in Middletown on Thursday evening. Leading the Vikings offensively was Trevor Green, who finished with a team-high 13 points. Demani Benjamin added 11 points and Kobi Wallace had 10 points, including eight points in the second half alone.
