Men’s and Women’s Cross Country: The men’s and women’s cross country programs began its 2023 season at the SUNY Poly Short Course meet, hosted by SUNY Poly in Utica on Sept. 2.
The men’s program placed third out of nine participating programs and was led by Samuel Van Auken, who placed 10th overall with a time of 21:12. Cross country returners, Adam Blough and Garrick Smith-Growick, placed 28th and 30th, respectively. Blough finished with an official time of 22:58 and Smith-Growick posted a time of 23:06.
The women’s program also placed third overall out of nine programs at the SUNY Poly Short Course meet. The women’s team was led by Laurel Ticer, who placed 34th overall with a time of 22:26. Rebecca Martin placed 40th overall with an official time of 23:15 and Sydney Swedish was not too far behind in 42nd place overall with a time of 23:45.
Football: The football program improved to 2-0 over the weekend after they narrowly edged Thaddeus Stevens, 30-29, in Lancaster, PA.
The Vikings jumped out to a big lead as the offensive and defensive units were dialed in and getting positive results, but Thaddeus Stevens fought its way back, scoring a late game touchdown to tie the game. However, the Bulldogs decided to go for the win with a two-point attempt, but came up short as the Hudson Valley defense kept them out of the end zone and secured the win.
Leading the way for the Vikings was running back Bo Catherwood, who had a monstrous day, tallying 218 total yards. Catherwood was a menace in the screen-pass game as the quick hitters caught the defense off guard and he went on to score an 84-yard score and a 75-yard score, both resulting from the screen pass.
Up next for the Vikings will be one of the biggest games of the season as they welcome nationally-ranked Nassau to the Outdoor Athletic Complex for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 16, for the NJCAA ESPN+ Game of the Week, as announced by the NJCAA on Aug. 28.
