This week in athletics

 

Men’s basketball (7-12) won all three games last week, including an historic win against the No.2 ranked Herkimer Generals at home on Saturday afternoon. The 75-63 win over Herkimer was the first win against the Generals since Jan. 24, 2009, snapping an 18-game losing streak against Herkimer. Mitchell Dame finished with a game-high 23 points.

The Vikings also defeated Albany Pharmacy on the road, 70-68, on a buzzer-beater by Brandon Degrasse on Jan. 24. The Vikings completed the undefeated week on Sunday afternoon by defeating Broome, 70-65, in comeback fashion.

Upcoming Games: Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Adirondack; Saturday, Feb. 3 vs. Schenectady (Spirit Day — noon to 4 p.m.)

Women’s basketball (12-7) also completed an undefeated week, going 2-0 with wins over Herkimer (60-57) and Broome (58-33) last weekend. The Vikings have now won three straight games and are playing great team basketball.

In the win against Herkimer, Hudson Valley’s Kali Szczepanski (Las Vegas/Watervliet) and Cameran Henderson (Green Island/Heatly) were up for the challenge as they combined to score 17 of the Vikings 21 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. The duo also assisted on both baskets scored by Hayley Jones (Catskill/Catskill) in the quarter.

Men’s bowling had a successful weekend on the lanes as they won conference matches on Friday, hosted by Mohawk Valley and placed second of 13 teams in the Westchester Shootout.

In the conference matches, Garrett Bartlett (Brunswick/Tamarac) recorded the high score for the first match as he finished with a game-high of 260 and a series-high of 668. Spencer McClellan (Troy/Lansingburgh) also had a solid first match as he finished with a game-high of 253 and a series-high of 725.

Women’s bowling placed second in the conference match at Mohawk Valley on Friday and placed fifth of 10 teams in the Westchester Shootout on Saturday.

In the conference match, Megan Gaige (Colonie/South Colonie) finished with the Vikings top score with a game-high of 258 and a series-high of 661. Day finished the second match with a game-high of 244 and a series-high of 707.

Upcoming bowling schedule: Feb. 3 at Boulevard Classic (hosted by Schenectady); Feb. 4 at Schenectady Invitational (hosted by Schenectady).
