Track and Field had a historic weekend as the men’s team won the NJCAA Region 3 championship in its first season back since the college decided to end the program several years ago. The meet saw several individual student-athletes set personal records and qualify for the National meet this weekend. Elijah Washington was named the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet following his two wins in the Hammer Throw and Shot Put. Washington tossed the hammer 45.67m and the shot put 12.66m. Washington also placed second in the Javelin with a final throw of 39.84m.
The women’s top student-athlete was Ashley Martinez as she was named the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet following her two wins in the 100m and 200m dash events. Martinez nearly swept all sprint events after she placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 1:05.38, which was 0.03 seconds behind Onondaga’s Shelby Kiteveles.
The Vikings will carry their championship momentum into the National meet May 10 to 12, which is hosted by Mohawk Valley.
Baseball (21-11) has been playing great this season as they finished last week with a 6-2 record, including a six-game win streak with sweeps over Jefferson and Columbia-Greene. Prior to Sunday’s games at Mohawk Valley, the Vikings had three student-athletes hitting .500 or better for the week. The team was led by Ben Grant who hit .667 (4-for-6) and scored five runs and hit his first home run of the season. Jackson Wenstrom batted .550 with three home runs, 13 RBIs and four doubles. Derek Miller hit .500 with nine hits and seven RBIs.
The Vikings finish up the regular season on Tuesday at home vs. Adirondack at 2 p.m. The Vikings are in contention for hosting a sub-regional series this weekend.
Golf played in the Genesee Invitational on Sunday, but the scores were not available at the time of this posting. The team has qualified for the Regional Tournament being held on Sunday, May 13 and Monday, May 14 at Tompkins Cortland.
Softball (7-13) concluded its 2018 season and finished the year with a 7-1 record in the team’s final eight games. Since May 1, Elizabeth Brooking is hitting .733 with 11 hits, five doubles and nine RBIs. During the same time period, Paige Roberts is hitting .696 with 16 hits, six doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs. Sierra Putnam made a charge in the final eight games as she batted .435 with two home runs and 10 RBIs.
