This week in athletics

 

Cross Country
The Hudson Valley Community College men’s and women’s cross-country teams performed very well at the 2018 NJCAA National Championship Meet on Saturday morning in Westfield, Mass.

The men’s team finished in seventh place out of 23 teams and first among the NJCAA Region 3 participants. Freshman Jared Craw earned All-American status behind his fourth-place finish in the 8k race. He crossed the line with a final time of 27:31.82.

The women’s cross country team finished in fifth place out of 14 teams and were led by sophomore Mercedes Planavsky. Planavsky joined Craw in earning All-American status after crossing the finish line in 10th place in the 5k race with a final time of 20:15.42

Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team jumped out to a 2-0 start with a pair of home wins against Rockland and Cayuga. Caleb Canty and Jordan Gleason had a great game on Saturday as the duo combined to score 60 of the team’s 103 points vs. Cayuga.

Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team simply dominated their opponents last week with a pair of home wins to start the season, 2-0. Hannah Kreiger led the Vikings in scoring, which included a 26-point effort on Saturday in the Vikings 85-44 win vs. Cayuga.

Football
Hudson Valley Community College football closed out the 2018 season on the road at Navy Prep and were defeated 33-0.

Men’s Soccer
The All-Conference and All-Region awards were announced last week and Bryan Drossell earned All-Region Second Team, while Sylvain “Marco” Ngako and Wickson Joseph earned All-Conference honors for the 2018 season.

Women’s Soccer
The All-Conference and All-Region awards were announced last week with Sydnee Metzold leading the way. Metzold was named the NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Year and the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year following her tremendous season in which she scored 28 goals. Metzold joined Serena Gates as All-Region First Team selections and Bailey Dunn earned All-Region Second Team. Metzold, Gates, Dunn and Brooke Clough were named to the All-Conference Team.

Women’s Tennis
The NJCAA Region 3 Champions, Jackie Bornt competed in the NJCAA National Tournament over the weekend and won the back draw finals in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 on Sunday in Peachtree City, Georgia. Bornt dropped her first match on Friday, but recovered with match wins on Saturday and Sunday for the back draw title.

Women’s Volleyball
The All-Conference awards were announced last week and sophomore captain, Kirstin Wood was named to the Mountain Valley All-Conference team.
